Why does ordinary paper deteriorate?

Standard office paper, which we know from everyday use, contains acids and lignin. These are what cause the sheets to turn yellow and brittle after just 20-50 years. Professional acid-free paper is produced using a completely different technology. - free from harmful substances, retains its properties for hundreds of years. This is why state museums, galleries, and archives use it as the only acceptable barrier for valuable objects.

Key choice: With a buffer or without?

Acid-free papers come in two variants, and choosing the correct one is critical for the safety of the object:

• With an alkaline buffer: It contains a calcium carbonate buffer that actively neutralises acids migrating from the environment. This is the best choice for most paper documents, prints and manuscripts.
• Without alkaline buffer: Intended for materials sensitive to alkaline pH. It is essential for the archiving of photographs (especially colour), fabrics, certain graphics, and objects with natural dyes.

Versatility in your workshop:

• Protection and dividers Low-weight silk paper serves as a protective layer between pages, and smooth glassine paper protects photographs from abrasion.
• Wet process support Filter papers (in rolls and sheets) are indispensable for the deacidification, washing, and drying of objects.
• Exposure and stabilisation: Rigid mounting boards provide a secure base for the display and storage of flat objects.
