What are museum vacuum cleaners used for?

A standard household vacuum cleaner is not suitable for dealing with collections – excessive suction power, a lack of precise nozzle attachments and inefficient filtration mean that instead of protecting objects, you can damage them or spread fungal spores into the air. Museum vacuum cleaners are devices with variable suction control, a set of micro-nozzles (narrow attachments for spines, shelves and gaps between pages) and multi-stage HEPA filtration, which traps even the smallest particles.

Laminar flow cabinets in the conservation studio

A laminar flow cabinet is a workstation with a laminar flow of filtered air, creating a zone free from dust, spores and contamination. In conservation, it is used for working with objects infested with mould (protecting the operator), for the examination and repair of particularly valuable documents (protecting the object), and for the dry cleaning of archival volumes in a controlled environment.

Stations and machines for mass cleaning

Where the number of items to be cleaned is in the thousands – for example, after a warehouse flood, the acquisition of a neglected collection, or as part of the scheduled maintenance of a large collection – manual cleaning becomes insufficient. Mass book-cleaning machines and cleaning workstations with dust extraction allow for efficient, repeatable work with large volumes, while maintaining operator safety through filtration and ventilation systems.
