The first thought of many old book lovers is to reach for whatever they have in their cupboard: <strong>shoe polish, pure beeswax, or a conditioning oil. Unfortunately, this is a quick way to ruin the binding.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leather on book bindings requires a completely different approach than a leather jacket, saddle, or winter boots. In this article, we'll explain why popular household remedies can harm your bookshelf and guide you on how to wisely choose the right product to restore antique books to their former glory without the risk of damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the leather on books so demanding?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To understand how to care for an old binding, we first need to look at the leather itself. Bookbinding uses leather that is much thinner and more delicate than that used in the footwear industry. Furthermore, old tanning techniques mean that the leather on books reacts very severely to any domestic \u201etreatments\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The most common faults and damage include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fat overload<\/strong> \u2013 oils that are too heavy cause unsightly, dark stains and ripples, and the fat can penetrate deep into the paper sheets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Back brace<\/strong> \u2013 a thick layer of hard wax makes the leather lose its elasticity and begin to crack with every opening of the book.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Discoloration<\/strong> \u2013 Coloured pastes with pigment can permanently alter the shade of the cover and forever stain the reader's hands and adjacent pages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, when caring for a home archive, we always look for very gentle preparations, free from silicone, aggressive solvents, and artificial colourings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pure wax and lanolin \u2013 why it's better to be careful with them?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In homemade renovation recipes, two magic ingredients often appear: beeswax and lanolin. Although both are completely natural, using them in their \u201epure\u201d form is a big risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beeswax \u2013 beautiful sheen, but risk of cracking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wax perfectly protects against moisture and gives leather bindings that desirable, satin sheen without feeling sticky. However, applying pure wax to a thin cover is very difficult. It is incredibly easy to overdo it, creating a hard, crusty layer. Over time, such a coating will stiffen the most delicate part of the book. <strong>\u2013 its spine, which drastically speeds up cracking when browsing pages.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lanolin \u2013 powerful moisturisation, but the threat of greasy stains<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lanolin is sheep's wool grease with a waxy texture. Its moisturising and softening properties are invaluable. Unfortunately, when applied on its own, it is far too heavy and intense for thin bookbinding covers. Pure lanolin can instantly make the leather greasy, leading to irreversible waves and dark stains. In extreme cases, the oil can penetrate directly into the paper, destroying the content of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The golden mean: why balm is the best choice?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of experimenting with semi-finished products, it is best to use a special balm for home renovation. It is a safe, ready-made mixture, in which you will find both beeswax (for protection and shine) and lanolin and natural oils (for moisturising and softening), but in perfectly balanced, light proportions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good balm regenerates and renews the skin's colour, leaving the pores open so the binding can \u201ebreathe\u201d. When choosing a product for your collection, look for items described as dedicated \u201efor smooth leather\u201d or \u201efor leather goods,\u201d ensuring they do not contain dyes or chemical solvents. Conversely, avoid \u201eheavy-duty\u201d preparations (for saddles or trekking footwear) \u2013 they are far too strong for old books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to correctly apply balm to a leather binding?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skincare isn't difficult if you follow a simple, safe principle: \u201eless is more.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dust extraction<\/strong> Before applying any product, thoroughly dust the book. It\u2019s best to use a soft, natural-bristle brush or a delicate cloth for this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dress rehearsal<\/strong> Always perform a test on an inconspicuous area of skin (e.g. on the inner rim of the cover). Check that the product does not discolour the material.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A microscopic amount<\/strong> Apply a small amount of balm \u2013 literally the size of a pea \u2013 to a clean cotton cloth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gentle polishing:<\/strong> Spread the product evenly in an ultra-thin layer over the cover. Then gently polish the surface to a satin sheen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How often should this treatment be repeated? In a home bookshelf protected from harsh sunlight, it's enough to do it once every few years. More frequent conditioning is only necessary if the books are kept in a particularly dry or heavily sunlit room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Home renovation toolkit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For safe care of bookbinding covers, you don't need complex chemical tools.
